In this video breakdown I took a deeper dive into Mitch Trubisky from UNC. Trubisky only has one full year of starting and showed a quick release, plus accuracy, and was surprisingly slippery in the pocket. Poor pocket awareness from edge rushers, how he sometimes panics under pressure during plays, and limited experience are his biggest weaknesses.
Grade: Early 2nd Round – I think he’ll get picked in the first and will most likely be the first QB off the board. He has some high level traits, but there are some serious red flags:
1. Him not being able to unseat Marquise Williams, a future undrafted QB
2. Pressure affects his mechanics and vision when he feels stress
3. Significant drop-off in production when comparing ranked vs unranked opponents (He was awesome vs Florida State, but looked borderline undraftable versus Virginia Tech)
Pro Comp: Andy Dalton. Both quarterbacks have quick releases who are generally accurate passers. They have similar above-average arm strength with good mobility in the pocket. Both quarterbacks also struggled with pocket awareness not fully sensing pressure coming from the edge and both played in a very QB friendly system in college without many snaps from under center.
